I tested these methods in my urban field geography course in Spring 2017. This class had an enrollment of 17, and was organized around weekly all-day field trips. This made for a somewhat unique pilot, since students were already spending a great deal of time in the field. Based on this trial, I think that engagement could actually improve in a course that did not already have a field component.
